2140 GMT: Marchers are reportedly congregating in Union Square and Foley Square, with more people moving down New York's avenues to join them.

Despite reports of some intersections being close to impassable, the opening bell has rung at the New York Stock Exchange:

Journalist Lucy Kafanov tweets, "I just got clubbed. What the hell?"

She follows up, "Mass arrests and violence on Broad and Beaver. Officer hit my arm with club. Another photog got shoved. Police beat protesters."

1355 GMT:

Reports are coming in of arrests --- Al Jazeera's Cath Turner writes, "At least a dozen #ows protesters handcuffed and lined up against a wall. Police forming a line and pushing us back. 'No permit, you gotta go'." James Foley messages, "About 25 just arrested for sitting down."

Police have given their first warning: "Be advised: you do not have a parade permit. People in street subject to arrest."

Josh Harkinson of Mother Jones, who provided front-line reporting on the struggle for Liberty Square on Tuesday, is back: "Occupiers had the street here and cops shoved them out. It was like a football game, but the cops ultimately had more brawn."
