Gaza Latest: Israel Warnings over 2 Aid Ships, UN Flotilla Enquiry, & More

Israel Concerned over New Flotillas: On Friday, Israeli officials urged  warned Lebanon to prevent two aid ships, Junia and Julia, from departing to Gaza.

Defense Minister Ehud Barak issued a statement that the aid ships were an "unnecessary provocation" like other flotillas:
We hold the Lebanese government responsible for preventing the flotilla from departing today, and if it does depart it will be accompanied by Israel's Navy to the Ashdod port. If the ship refuses to be accompanied to Ashdod we will have no choice but to apprehend it in open waters.

Middle East Inside Line: Abbas-US Tension, Netanyahu’s “Political Risk”, More Gaza Flotillas?, UN-Israeli Relations

Israel's ambassador to the United Nations, Gabriela Shalev, accused organizers of the aid ships of "seeking to incite a confrontation and raise tensions in our region".

In letters to Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon and the Security Council obtained Thursday by The Associated Press, Shalev said, "Israel reserves its right under international law to use all necessary means to prevent these ships from violating the ... naval blockade."

UN Probe on Flotilla Attack: The United Nations Human Rights Council has appointed a team of international experts on Friday to investigate Israel's raid in on the Gaza-bound Freedom Flotilla.

The fact-finding team comprises three independent experts --- Sir Desmond de Silva (Britain), Karl Hudson-Phillips (Trinidad and Tobago,) and Mary Shanthi Dairiam (Malaysia).

An Israeli Foreign Ministry official said that the UN Human Rights Council's made its decision in haste, and that it was "part of the Rights Council's obsession against Israel" . The official added:
The Israeli probe, conducted with transparency, makes the organization's probe completely unnecessary.

Israel Returning Freedom Flotilla Ships to Turkey: Israel has given up asking Ankara for a guarantee against the Freedom Flotilla's craft being used in another attempt to break the siege on Gaza and will send three ships back to Turkey.

Israel Military Puts Flotilla Issues Back to Government: In an interview with Reshet Bet on Friday, Maj.-Gen Giora Eiland, head of the military commission conducting an internal investigation of the attack on the Freedom Flotilla, said that it was possible to prevent the flotilla's mission to Gaza by political means.

Eiland, noting "changing political winds in Turkey", suggested that Israel "could have opened the Gaza crossings in advance, before the Turkish flotilla". However, he said, Israel preferred waiting for international pressure before taking steps.

Middle East Inside Line: US Reaction to House Demolitions, Netanyahu-Mubarak Meeting Deferred and More...

US Criticises Demolition of Palestinian Houses: On Wednesday, State Department spokesman Philip Crowley criticized Israel's recent demolition of Palestinian houses in East Jerusalem: "It is the very kind of action that poses a potential obstacle to direct negotiations. Any steps that the Israelis, Palestinians or other parties take that change the facts on the ground, we think are unhelpful."

Netanyahu Not Going to Cairo: Egypt deferred "the planned meeting between President Hosni Mubarak and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. Israeli sources claim that the underlying reason of the postponement is Mubarak's deteriorating health situation (see separate EA entry with further information). However, speaking with Al-Shorouq on Wednesday, a senior Egyptian official denied reports of Mubarak's ailing health, saying the meeting was pushed back due to "provocative moves made by Israel".

Turkey Insists on International Probe of Flotilla Attack: After Maj.-Gen. Giora Eiland announced that a military commission's findings that the Israeli Navy had made "operational mistakes" in the 31 May operation against the Freedom Flotilla to Gaza, Turkey's Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu told reporters Tuesday that he welcomed the acknowledgement of "mistakes". However, he said the Israeli commandos had committed "a crime" and said Turkey wants an international enquiry.

Israel Radar System Successfully Tested: Israel tested the Iron Dome's advanced radar system successfully on Wednesday, moving a step closer to deploying both radars and interceptor missiles along the Gaza and Lebanon borders.

Hezbollah's "List of Targets": In an interview with AFP, Naim Kassem, the leader of Hezbollah, said that the group has "large and precise" list of Israeli targets to attack if a third Lebanon war breaks out. He continued:
We now hold a large and precise bank of Israeli targets, and Israel will have to pay the price for any step it takes.

Hezbollah has worked to develop its readiness to rise to the challenge should it arise, and we can safely say that in the past four years we have prepared ourselves far more than Israel has.

Gaza Latest: Israel's Flotilla Enquiry, Germans Ban Turkey's IHH, & Libyan Ship En Route to Gaza

Israel's Enquiry: Last week, the Israeli Government agreed to expand the powers of the civilian Turkel Commission to include the right to subpoena witnesses. However, this was not satisfactory for activist organization Gush Shalom who requested that the committee be given the power to investigate soldiers as well. The High Court's response was not to discuss the petition further unless the commission requests that it carry out such an investigation.

Meanwhile, the head of  the military committee, Maj.- Gen. (res.) Giora Eiland, has presented the Israeli Chief of Staff, General Gabi Ashkenazi with a 100-page report detailing findings over into the military operation against the Freedom Flotilla's Mavi Marmara.

Gaza Latest: Amalthia to Break the Siege?, Ireland’s “Revenge”, Mavi Marmara Becomes a Hotel?

The report says that there were only "operational mistakes" but no "operational failures" made in the planning stage of the operation. The committee criticized the Navy for not preparing a “Plan B” for the operation and said the commanders should have reconsidered putting commandos onto the Mavi Marmara’s upper deck after noticing from sea and air that there were several dozen activists on board prepared to violently resist.

The committee also said that military intelligence did not designate Turkey or the flotilla's organiser IHH as a target for gathering of information. Eiland described Turkey as "a friendly country up until 2010" and assessed the relationship with Israel as a "deteriorating" one.

Germany Bans IHH: On Monday, Germany banned the International Humanitarian Relief Organization (IHH), the organiser of the Freedom Flotilla. German Interior Minister De Maiziere said organizations that "directly or indirectly work against Israel's right to exist lose their right to be active in Germany." The first response came from the European Jewish Congress (EJC):
Over a month ago we called on front-groups like the IHH to be proscribed and banned from raising funds in Europe, we encourage the European Union to give this the highest priority. Now that Germany has shown the way, we hope that European Union and other European governments will officially ban the IHH.

It is vital that the European Union and European governments act quickly to ban organizations which pose as charities or humanitarian agencies from raising funds that assist terrorism, murder and militant activity.

Libyan Ship to Arrive Gaza on Wednesday?: The Libyan-backed aid ship, the Amalthea, is to arrive at Gaza on Wednesday, according to Agence France Presse.

The website of the charity funding the ship, headed by Saif al-Islam Gadaffi, son of Libyan leader Muammar Gaddaffi, stated that "the crew on board the ship maintains a positive mood".

Haaretz reports military officials' statements that IDF is ready for forceful interception despite continuing criticisms.
