Iran Video Feature: The Unemployed and Hungry Beg Ahmadinejad for Help

Vivid footage from Mahmoud Ahmadinejad's visit to Hormozgan Province in southern Iran on Saturday --- as the President, en route to a speech, waves to bystanders from his motorcade, people try to give him written notes with appeals for help.

An elderly man shouts, “I’m hungry, I’m hungry." A young woman in a black chador scrambles on the hood of Ahmadinejad's car until she is face-to-face with the President. She complains about economic hardships; he listens for a moment before she is moved on.

A couple of notes on the video: it is common for Iranians to make these dramatic appeals to Ahmadinejad on his tours. An EA correspondent from Iran explains, "This may appear strange to foreigners, but an emotional outburst in a desperate situation is absolutely normal, for example, at mourning ceremonies."

And, perhaps perversely, the approach to the President --- even though his Government is blamed by many for the Islamic Republic's current economic woes and in one of the poorest parts of Iran --- can be seen as a sign of his strength amid political manoeuvres within the system. Our correspondent continues, "This has been Ahmadinejad's populist policy, presenting himself as a saviour to poor people for the past seven years. Very humiliating but true."

Bahrain Document: Amnesty International on Regime's "Flawed Reforms"

A policeman challenges activist Zainab Alkhawaja, shortly before her arrest, 15 December 2011

Amnesty International, in a 58-page report, documents how the regime, despite the King's proclamation of "sweeping and broad" reforms, has failed to make significant changes since the November 2011 report of the Bahrain Independent Commission of Inquiry. The organisation outlines a series of political, legal, and social measures which must be implemented for any notions of fairness, justice, and rights to take hold.

The Conclusions and Recommendations:

Important recommendations contained in the BICI [Bahrain Independent Commission of Inquiry] report have yet to be fully implemented.

These include recommendations dealing with accountability for the human rights violations carried out in connection with anti-government protests in 2011. The reported investigations of allegations of torture and unlawful killings by the security forces have been shrouded in secrecy. So far only nine low-ranking policemen have been put on trial. The new investigative body, placed under the PPO, lacks independence, impartiality and effectiveness. Scores of prisoners, tried unfairly in military courts and sentenced to long-term prison sentences, have not been released although they were convicted solely for leading and participating in antigovernment protests without using or advocating violence. Police brutality continues unabated with daily excessive use of force to deal with demonstrators. Reports of torture and other ill-treatment continue to reach Amnesty International.

Iran Special: The Inside Story of the Nuclear Talks in Istanbul (Rozen)

Europe's Catherine Ashton and Iran's Saeed JaliliOver the last three days, we have put out the analysis that 1) sanctions played a role in bringing Iran to the negotiating table over its nuclear programme; 2) Tehran's strategy is to get an easing of those sanctions before it makes any commitment on enrichment of uranium; and 3) the Islamic Republic is concentrating on the European representatives, especially the European Union's Catherine Ashton, to achieve this by splitting them from any "hard line" of the US.

In the most detailed account of last weekend's Istanbul talks so far, Laura Rozen of Al Monitor narrates the story of how the discussions almost collapsed while supporting our interpretation of the Iran's hopes, fears, and manoeuvres:

New details on the Iran nuclear talks in Istanbul this weekend, which were largely touted as being "positive", now show the meeting had, in fact, deteriorated.

Bahrain Video Special: Turning a Police-Supported Mob into Political Comedy

Last week, shocking CCTV footage surfaced of a raid on a Bahrain supermarket, owned by the Jawad Group, a long-time target of harassment by loyalist groups.

A mob of young men streamed into the shop, smashing and stealing with impunity. Police eventually arrived on the scene, but rather than react with tear gas and mass arrests, they appeared to support the looters or, at a minimum, are acquiesce in their actions.

There is something surreal and comedic about the footage, to the point where one wonders it might actually have happened. This perhaps was the inspiration for "Cam 3", the latest short film by Bahrana Drama:

Afghanistan: "This is Our Fate" --- An Encounter with My Friend Massoud Hossaini about Photography, Life, and a Suicide Bombing

Photograph: Massoud Hosseini (Agence France Presse/Getty)

Afghan photographer Massoud Hossaini was awarded a Pulitzer Prize today for his visual portrait, posted above, of the scene of a bombing in Kabul in December. Days after that episode, EA's Josh Shahryar spoke with his friend --- this article is reprinted from 13 December:

Formalities become meaningless when you call an old friend who has survived a suicide bombing that took the lives of dozens. My friend Massoud Hossaini understood that just as well as I did.

The Latest from Iran (15 April): A Setback for the President

1755 GMT: Supreme Leader Watch. Former Government spokesman Gholam Hossein Elham has declared that Ayatollah Khamenei is dealing with "slackers" on the Expediency Council because idle people disturb the Iranian system.

1750 GMT: All the President's Men. Yet more confusion in the case of President Ahmadinejad's advisor Saeed Mortazavi and his appointment as head of the Social Security Fund (see 0830 and 1203 GMT)....

Gholam Ali Haddad Adel --- MP, former Speaker of Parliament, and member of the Supreme Leader's inner circle --- has insisted that Mortazavi is adhering to his promise as head of the Fund amidst criticism from MPs of the appointment.

President Ahmadinejad has reportedly rejected Mortazavi's resignation.

Syria, Bahrain (and Beyond) Live Coverage: Will the Observers Make A Difference?

1959 GMT: Before today started in Syria, the UN Human Rights investigators had already expressed concern that the violence escalated significantly before the deadline for the ceasefire had arrived.

"The commission is also concerned by reports of new arrests, especially in Hama and Aleppo."

With news that the wholesale shelling of Homs continued, activists reported that Assad's air force was conducting attacks against Idlib and Saraqeb, and that at least 50 people have been killed today, I wonder how long the the UN monitors can keep a straight face when saying that things have gotten better since the ceasefire.

1948 GMT: Activist Zainab AlKhawaja reports that she may be receiving preferential treatment by Bahraini police because she is so high-profile, but there may be a case filed against her for taking pictures of tonight's protests:
